Sydney, NSW

29th December 2019

A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.

After planning our trip for well over a year the time had finally come. We had arrived in Sydney. Our flight time was roughly 24 hours and we’d passed through many time zones along the way so as you can imagine, we were extremely fatigued.

Once we arrived at the airport we wielded out oversized backpacks and braced ourselves for the blistering heat. (27°C lol) It didn’t help that we were still wearing our winter clothes from London and it was too much hassle to get changed. We managed to navigate the public transport and checked into Wake Up! Sydney at around 10am. We had time to kill before our room was ready so we opted to go for a walk down towards the harbour. Due to the ongoing Australian bush fires the sky was noticeably smokey and foggy. Something that occurred quite often whilst in Australia was getting approached by relentless travel reps, trying to sell us their excursions. Being a young British couple it took us only a few seconds to be approached by our first rep, where we spent the next 20 minutes trying to figure out a way to leave as we were both too awkward and polite to say no.

Eventually we managed to slip away and continued down to the harbour, which is when we saw it. The Sydney Opera house. Australia epitomised by a building. It felt surreal seeing that oddly shaped piece of architecture that we’ve only ever seen on TV in the flesh, but wow was it satisfying. We explored the harbour and bridge for a little longer before heading back to our hostel and falling asleep at 2pm.

We didn’t have the greatest of expectations for Sydney as we assumed it was going be just another busy city, however we were pleasantly surprised. Sydney is a combination of a Central Business District and a seaside town but full of tourists.
